Staff from Silicon Sensing’s UK office were extremely busy recently at Oi2014 (Oceanology International) in London’s ExCel conference centre. During the three show days over 100 current and new customers expressed interest in the range of new precision MEMS gyroscopes, accelerometers and IMUs.
Marine markets for MEMS inertial components have been growing steadily. “One of our principal objectives during the exhibition was to collect the voice-of-the-customer”, explains Steve Clarke, Chief Applications Engineer at Silicon Sensing. “We’ve had several remarkable breakthroughs in our MEMS sensor designs and manufacturing processes, enabling higher accuracy motion sensing from our accelerometer and gyroscope products. As we’re now integrating these sensors into a new range of high-performance ‘multi-MEMS’ products it’s important to listen to what the market needs. The show demonstrated considerable interest from customers and we heard several consistent messages which we’ve already fed back into the projects.”
Most of the applications for surface and subsea vehicles and equipment require high precision 6 or 9 degree-of-freedom solutions. Previewed at the show for the first time were two all-new commercial grade MEMS IMUs (Inertial Measurement Unit) currently at advanced stages of development in Silicon Sensing. The first is a miniature precision IMU (DMU10) for 6-DOF requirements requiring stable performance on a budget, and the second a new high-end IMU (HPIMU) with north-finding capability comparable to FOG/RLG based IMUs.
