How it works

Here's a not-too-technical view on how our particular flavour of solid state MEMS gyros work.

Coriolis forces underpin the operation of our technology.  We use our unique resonating ring technology, which is heavily protected by patent. The silicon ring is set to vibrate at its natural frequency - known as Cos 2-theta.  It remains vibrating the whole time the gyro is powered up.

When the gyro is NOT experiencing rotation (yaw rate) it is operating in 'Mode 1'.  The node (stationary) points on the ring are shown at the -45deg and +45deg points (also in the lower half of the ring).

The rotational motion occuring when the car turns a corner causes coriolis forces to act on the ring which changes its vibrating mode ('Mode 2').  The coriolis force couples vibration to a point 45deg from the driven axis - the previously stationary node points now experience a vibration proportional to rotation rate.

Because the ring is operating at its natural frequency, and because all the ring motion is contained within the plane of the silicon, it is difficult for external forces to affect these vibration modes.  The performance of the gyro is therefore maintained, even in harsh real-world environments.
